Scholarship Overview
The 2025 MEXT Scholarship is tailored for exceptional international students who aim to develop expertise in environmental conservation and leadership. This program supports students pursuing either a master’s or doctoral degree and is part of Japan’s commitment to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Scholarship Benefits
- Duration: Master’s course 2 years, and doctoral course 3 years
- Monthly Allowance: Master’s 144,000 JPY, and doctoral course stipend 145,000 JPY
- Travel Expenses: MEXT provides round-trip airfare for arrival and return.
- Exempted Fees: Application, matriculation, and tuition fees are fully covered.
Qualifications and Eligibility Requirements
1# Academic Requirements
- Must be an international student with outstanding academic achievements.
- Applicants must have a GPA of 2.30/3.00 or above in their previous or current courses and must maintain this GPA throughout the scholarship period.
2# Language Proficiency
To qualify, you must meet one of the following English language requirements:
- Achieve a B2 level or higher in any of the following:
- TOEFL iBT: Minimum total score of 72
- IELTS (Academic): Minimum overall band score of 5.5
- TOEIC: Listening (400), Reading (385), Speaking (160), Writing (150)
- Alternatively, applicants who have completed their previous academic program in English may also qualify.
Application and Selection Process
Step 1# Contact a Prospective Supervisor
Before applying, you must contact a prospective supervisor at Hokkaido University to discuss your suitability for the program. You can find details about supervisors on the Staff Information page. Ensure you obtain their agreement to support your application, as all documents must be submitted through your supervisor.
Step 2: Submit Required Documents
- Application Form for MEXT Scholarship:
- Field of Study and Study Program (highlighting its relevance to SDGs)
- Copy of your passport or equivalent government-issued ID
- Official academic transcripts and certificate of (prospective) graduation
- Proof of language proficiency
- Recommendation letter from your current university or institution’s dean
- Abstracts of theses (if applicable) and a career plan.
